The collapse of the Nicoll Highway on 20 April 2004 remains one of Singapore’s most significant construction tragedies, prompting a nationwide reassessment of engineering practices, safety regulations, and project oversight. More than two decades on, this seminar revisits the incident to reflect on the technical and management failures that led to the collapse and, more importantly, to examine how the industry has transformed in its wake.
This session brings together leading voices from regulatory agencies, engineering bodies, and workplace safety experts to present a multi-dimensional reflection of the impact of the Nicoll Highway collapse. Presentations will recap the incident, and the systemic reforms introduced since the incident. A high-level panel discussion will further explore critical success factors in construction safety and health today and identify ongoing areas for vigilance and improvement.
Through this seminar, participants will gain insights into how a tragedy became a catalyst for change—and how continued leadership, regulation, and collaboration are essential to ensure safety in an increasingly complex construction landscape.
