Periyasamy Saravanan is a Workplace Safety and Health Officer (WSHO) and Environmental Control Officer (ECO) with over 18 years of experience in the construction industry. Currently, he oversees Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) management across all his projects. He is passionate about strengthening workplace safety culture through proactive Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA), adoption of technology, and active workforce engagement. He strongly believes that safety excellence is achieved through strong leadership commitment, continuous innovation, and empowering every worker to take ownership of workplace safety.
List the Safety and Health achievements/contributions you have achieved in 2025.
In 2025, he successfully led the implementation of proactive HIRA practices and smart safety technologies at the Serangoon Polyclinic project, contributing to the achievement of 1.0 million man-hours without any reportable accidents or authority violations. He introduced AI-powered safety solutions, including proximity cameras on telescopic handlers, the MEWP Safety Surveillance System (VIDSAFE MSS), automated lightning warning systems, WBGT heat stress monitoring, and Video Surveillance Analytics (VSS).
Weekly and monthly Safety Time-Out (STO) programmes were conducted to strengthen hazard awareness across all trades. He also enhanced workplace welfare through comprehensive heat stress management programmes, hydration initiatives, and worker engagement campaigns. The project was selected for multiple high-level visits, including MAST inspections and international delegation visits, where the implemented safety innovations were showcased.
These achievements significantly improved risk management performance, strengthened regulatory compliance, and reinforced a strong safety culture across the workforce.
Outline the Workplace Safety and Health initiatives that have been implemented by you in your workplace in 2025.
In 2025, he implemented several Workplace Safety and Health initiatives focusing on risk prevention through engineering and behavioural controls. Key initiatives included AI-enabled proximity detection systems to eliminate blind spot risks for heavy machinery, MEWP surveillance systems to prevent unsafe work-at-height behaviour, and digital QR-based Safe Work Procedure learning platforms to improve workers’ understanding of hazards.
Heat stress management programmes were strengthened through WBGT monitoring, hydration stations, fasting worker identification, and rest shelter provisions. He introduced daily online incident declaration reporting and a buddy system to support new workers. Additional measures included improved safe access provisions, slow-closing toolbox hinges to prevent hand injuries, enhanced lifting safety inspections, and technology-driven monitoring of high-risk activities. These initiatives aligned with the hierarchy of risk control principles and supported continuous HIRA improvement while enhancing operational safety performance.
Describe and support in detail on how your influencing capability has assisted in the successful implementation of these initiatives.
His influencing approach focuses on collaboration, communication, and leading by example. He actively engages project management, subcontractors, and workers during risk assessments to ensure safety ownership at all levels. By presenting data-driven risk analysis and demonstrating practical benefits, he successfully gained management support for adopting advanced safety technologies.
Regular Safety Time-Out sessions, toolbox meetings, and on-site coaching enabled workers to understand hazards in simple and practical ways. He encouraged open reporting of near misses and safety feedback through QR reporting platforms, creating trust and transparency. During authority and stakeholder visits, he confidently demonstrated implemented safety practices, strengthening organisational credibility. His consistent engagement transformed safety from a compliance requirement into a shared responsibility, ensuring strong acceptance and sustained implementation of WSH initiatives across the project.
Describe and provide support on how your initiative impacted the Safety and Health management and performance of your workplace/community/industry that was above and beyond.
The initiatives implemented under his leadership have significantly improved both organisational safety performance and industry learning outcomes. The integration of AI safety technologies reduced struck-by and work-at-height risks, lowering overall project risk index levels and improving operational efficiency.
Their project achieved zero incidents and successfully attained 1 million man-hours while maintaining strong regulatory compliance, demonstrating that innovation-driven HIRA can effectively prevent accidents. The site became a learning platform for government agencies and international delegates from Brunei SHENA, contributing to knowledge sharing beyond the organisation. Worker morale and safety awareness improved through welfare programmes and participative safety initiatives. These efforts strengthened community confidence, minimised environmental and public safety impacts, and demonstrated how construction projects can achieve productivity while maintaining high WSH standards. The initiatives have set a benchmark for technology-enabled safety management within the construction industry.
