About Alberto Selan
Alberto Selan's commitment to OSH was ignited by firsthand exposure to severe safety and environmental challenges stemming from manganese mining in his hometown in 2014. His postgraduate research critically evaluated tower crane inspection systems within Indonesia's construction sector. The study revealed systemic deficiencies, including gaps in certification standards, limited involvement of independent oversight bodies, and inconsistencies in routine inspection practices. Drawing on these findings, it proposed a series of evidence-based interventions and actionable developments to strengthen regulatory governance, improve compliance mechanisms, and mitigate the risk of catastrophic failures. The research was awarded a Distinction with a score of 80, recognising its analytical academic rigour, methodological robustness, and strong practical relevance to advancing construction safety standards.

Secondly, he also improved measurement practices by introducing appropriate and industry-recognised tools, including Noise Metres, Handled Sound Level Metres, Personal Dosimetres, and the NIOSH Sound Level Metre. This replaced the previous reliance on anemometres, which are unsuitable for evaluating noise exposure risks.
Next, to ensure greater analytical accuracy, he developed structured exposure calculation approaches that combined manual methods woth HSE Exposure Tables. Lastly, he also recommended revising the internal workplace environmental measurement form by incorporating a "Daily Noise Exposure Duration (hours)" parametre, ensuring alignment with Permenaker No. 5 of 2018.
Overall, these initiatives enhanced compliance and strenghtened the reliability of risk assessments. They also reinforced the organisation's capacity to effectively protect workers from occupational noise hazards.
