About Alberto Selan

Alberto Selan's commitment to OSH was ignited by firsthand exposure to severe safety and environmental challenges stemming from manganese mining in his hometown in 2014. Driven by a vision to create safer workplaces, he earned a scholarship to the University of Birmingham, where he excelled in advanced OSH studies and graduated with Distinction in 2025. Currently serving in the QHSE Division at PT Nindya Karya, Alberto has demonstrated exemplary professional accomplishments. He gained acknowledgement for achieving the highest SIM QHSE results by fostering workforce engagement and enhancing hazard-reporting mechanisms through pragmatic field-based strategies and digital measures.

List the Safety and Health achievements/contributions you have achieved in 2025.

After being awarded a fully funded scholarship in 2025, Alberto Selan pursued and completed a Master's degree in OSH at the University of Birmingham, UK. This milestone extended beyond personal advancement, serving as a catalyst for broader professional development by encouraging colleagues to enhance both their technical expertise in OSH discussions and linguistic competence, thereby enabling more effective and inclusive participation in global safety discourse.

His postgraduate research critically evaluated tower crane inspection systems within Indonesia's construction sector. The study revealed systemic deficiencies, including gaps in certification standards, limited involvement of independent oversight bodies, and inconsistencies in routine inspection practices. Drawing on these findings, it proposed a series of evidence-based interventions and actionable developments to strengthen regulatory governance, improve compliance mechanisms, and mitigate the risk of catastrophic failures. The research was awarded a Distinction with a score of 80, recognising its analytical academic rigour, methodological robustness, and strong practical relevance to advancing construction safety standards.

Outline the Workplace Safety and Health initiatives that have been implemented by you in your workplace in 2025.

In 2025, Alberto Selan led the comprehensive WSH initiatives to strengthen noise hazard management in construction settings. To enhance regulatory frameworks, he first adopted the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (Regulation 4) as a supplementary standard alongside national requirements.

Secondly, he also improved measurement practices by introducing appropriate and industry-recognised tools, including Noise Metres, Handled Sound Level Metres, Personal Dosimetres, and the NIOSH Sound Level Metre. This replaced the previous reliance on anemometres, which are unsuitable for evaluating noise exposure risks.

Next, to ensure greater analytical accuracy, he developed structured exposure calculation approaches that combined manual methods woth HSE Exposure Tables. Lastly, he also recommended revising the internal workplace environmental measurement form by incorporating a "Daily Noise Exposure Duration (hours)" parametre, ensuring alignment with Permenaker No. 5 of 2018.

Overall, these initiatives enhanced compliance and strenghtened the reliability of risk assessments. They also reinforced the organisation's capacity to effectively protect workers from occupational noise hazards.

Describe and support in detail on how your influencing capability has assisted in the successful implementation of these initiatives.

Alberto Selan ability to influence stakeholders was reflected in his strategic communication and consistent engagement, despite limited formal authority and remote involvement during his master’s studies in the UK. He was appointed by the Senior Vice President of the QHSE Division to deliver a presentation at a quarterly evaluation meeting, a key platform for shaping project-level practices. During the session, he systematically outlined gaps in existing noise-monitoring approaches, supported by regulatory frameworks, and the associated risks to worker health.

He enhanced the effectiveness of his message by combining data-driven analysis with practical examples drawn from ongoing projects. In addition, he maintained continuous communication through WhatsApp and email, allowing project teams to seek clarification and engage in constructive discussions. This sustained interaction fostered trust and strengthened stakeholder alignment.
Although he did not possess direct authority over implementation, his approach successfully increased awareness and encouraged meaningful behavioural change. It also facilitated the progressive integration of improved practices into project execution.

Describe and provide support on how your initiative impacted the Safety and Health management and performance of your workplace/community/industry that was above and beyond.

These initiatives generated profound impacts beyond standard safety practices, significantly improving the quality and reliability of noise exposure management across projects. Previously, monitoring activities were limited and dependent on unsuitable instruments, increasing the risk of underestimating exposure levels. By introducing appropriate measurement methodologies, enhancing calculation techniques, and aligning practices with regulatory and international standards, the initiatives strengthened the accuracy of exposure assessments and enabled more informed decision-making.

The improvements also supported the implementation of more effective risk control measures, particularly engineering controls, by encouraging modifications to work processes to minimise workers' direct exposure to noise. Plus, more reliable data enabled better PPE selection, ensuring optimal worker protection.

Moreover, updating internal documentation to include daily exposure duration enhanced compliance and system consistency. Beyond technical outcomes, the initiatives increased awareness and fostered a proactive safety culture across multiple projects, thereby improving occupational health performance.

In your opinion, what are the attributes of a safety influencer? Do share with us on how you have demonstrated these attributes in your daily work that will earn you the recognition of a WSHAsia Safety Influencer Award Winner in your workplace/community/industry.

In Alberto Selan's view, a credible safety influencer must embody integrity, approachability, consistency, and strong professional expertise. Integrity forms the cornerstone, ensuring alignment between what is communicated and what is practised.

He applies the safety principles he promoted within his own work to maintain authenticity and trust. Approachability is vital, as it fosters collaboration and encourages open dialogue with project teams. He supports this through active and responsive communication via WhatsApp and email, providing channels for discussion and knowledge sharing.

Consistency and discipline are critical for sustaining influence, as improving safety practices requires continuous effort and accountability. He maintained follow-ups and provide timely guidance to ensure ongoing implementation. In addition, he enhanced his professional credibility by pursuing a Master’s degree in HSE Management in the UK, enabling him to provide evidence-based, internationally aligned insights.

Collectively, these attributes have enabled him to drive heightened awareness and measurable improvements in safety practices. In turn, they have strengthened risk control and enhanced safety performance across projects.
