About Hana Fajrianti

Hana Fajrianti is among the youngest female leaders in Indonesia’s construction safety sector, currently serving as Vice President of QHSE Planning at PT Nindya Karya. With over 8 years of experience, she applies a research-driven and collaborative approach to improve workplace safety. Her background in Environmental Engineering and OHS supports her focus on industrial hygiene, subcontractor safety, and cost analysis. Hana is also active in global professional safety networks, has presented her research in multiple countries, and won global safety competitions. She believes that good safety leadership is not only about systems but also about influence, inclusion, and inspiring future professionals.

List the Safety and Health achievements/contributions you have achieved in 2024.

In 2024, Hana Fajrianti focused on advancing industrial hygiene practices in Indonesia’s construction sector, particularly in heat stress prevention and carbon emissions management—two complex areas in a high-turnover, temporary work environment. She also strengthened the company’s OHS strategy by developing structured leading and lagging indicators, ensuring each programme is linked to measurable safety outcomes and long-term impact. She pioneered the first Safety Engineering Training in collaboration with the University of Indonesia, involving operations and engineering managers as well as international lifting safety experts. This initiative marked a milestone for Indonesian state-owned construction companies. Additionally, she reformed the subcontractor safety evaluation system—shifting the focus from incident-only metrics to effort and capability-based assessments, helping subcontractors grow alongside main contractors. Her impactful work was recognised globally. She received 1st Place – Young Scientist Award at the WOS Conference in Germany, represented Indonesia at the Emerging Leaders Institute in Ireland, and was awarded Best Woman Leader for QHSE Excellence from the Business Sustainability Award (IQSA) in 2024. She also became a Top 10 Finalist in Nindya Leading Innovation 2024 through the idea of Effective and Sustainable Energy Management in Nindya Karya Building.

Outline the Workplace Safety and Health initiatives that have been implemented by you in your workplace in 2024.

Hana Fajrianti initiated three key Workplace Safety and Health initiatives in her workplace in 2024. First, she developed a digital carbon emission calculator tailored for construction activities and initiated a heat stress management strategy by assessing both exposure levels and workers’ perceptions of their needs. These efforts promoted a data-driven and worker-centered approach to managing environmental and physiological risks on site. Second, she designed and delivered the first safety engineering-based training in the SEOs construction sector, in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Department of Universitas Indonesia. This programme emphasised engineering-based safety design, encouraging workers to integrate safety measures by design, despite the complexity of varying work methods across construction projects. Lastly, she introduced a subcontractor performance assessment system aimed at capacity building—supporting subcontractors with weak HSE implementation to progressively meet Nindya Karya's standards through structured guidance from the selection process to final evaluation. These initiatives were built through collaboration with IT, Procurement, and Human Capital departments, and applied participatory, digital, and research-based approaches. As an initiator, her goal was to shift the workplace safety and health paradigm from compliance to collaborative safety innovation.

Describe and support in detail on how your influencing capability has assisted in the successful implementation of these initiatives.

Throughout the implementation of these initiatives, Hana Fajrianti's influencing approach focused on building trust, fostering collaboration, and presenting clear data. It was not easy at first — resistance to change was strong, especially given external uncertainties and the high turnover of third-party workers. She realised that gaining support meant more than just showing numbers; it meant connecting with people’s real concerns and aspirations. She worked closely with management, presenting both data and practical stories from the field to secure their commitment. On the ground, she engaged workers through small-group discussions and pilot programmes, showing that safety improvements were not just policies but personal protections. Partnering with IT, Procurement, and Human Capital teams, she made these initiatives a shared journey, not just a directive. Seeing workers become more aware, and watching management champion new policies, reminded her that lasting change comes from collective ownership, not top-down enforcement. Through this experience, she strengthened not only their Workplace Safety and Health systems but also the sense of community within their workplace.

Describe and provide support on how your initiative impacted the Safety and Health management and performance of your workplace/community/industry that was above and beyond.

The initiatives Hana Fajrianti introduced transformed their workplace’s OHS management system beyond conventional standards. She established a subcontractor management system where only partners meeting strict OHS criteria are eligible to work with them, making OHS performance a key part of business selection and evaluation. Through monitoring and coaching, they helped subcontractors with weaker performance progressively raise their standards, enabling sustainable improvement across projects. This approach improved compliance and fostered a culture where OHS became a shared responsibility between employees and external partners. To strengthen capabilities, she initiated the first Safety Engineering training programme in their sector, developing a syllabus now adopted across several SOEs in construction. The programme emphasised embedding safety measures into engineering design, shifting how safety is viewed—from reactive to proactive planning. Additionally, the NICAF platform for carbon emission inventory supported sustainability goals and enabled monitoring of environmental risks alongside safety metrics. The core transformation was the shift in culture and practice: OHS became central to both project delivery and decision-making, with active involvement from senior leadership. Efforts drove lasting change, positioning their company as a leader in advancing OHS standards beyond regulatory requirements.

In your opinion, what are the attributes of a safety influencer? Do share with us on how you have demonstrated these attributes in your daily work that will earn you the recognition of a WSHAsia Safety Influencer Award Winner in your workplace/community/industry.

In Hana Fajrianti's view, a true safety influencer must embody empathy towards workers, strong communication and education skills, collaborative engagement, data-driven decision making, and a constant drive for innovation. In her daily work, she prioritises listening to workers' perspectives beyond formal inspections, recognising that real safety improvements begin with human connection. She backs initiatives with thorough research, studying past data and industry literature before shaping company policies, ensuring decisions are not made by assumptions. Collaboration across departments is a key strategy she pursues, integrating OHS responsibility into all business functions, not isolating it within safety teams. Innovation is central to her approach, adapting OHS practices to evolving site realities, including the development of digital systems and new training models. Her commitment to safety is deeply personal: she once witnessed the life-altering consequences of a workplace injury during her early career as an engineer, which taught her that true success means ensuring every worker goes home safely. Winning the WSHAsia Safety Influencer Award would not only honour this commitment but also reinforce the value of human-centered, forward-looking leadership in building safer industries.
