Santosh Kumar Jha CertIOSH is an experienced and certified Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) professional having more than 23 years of experience in Petroleum Refineries and Aviation Fuel Stations at Airports – Day to Day Fuel Farm and Into-Plane Operations, Maintenance, Shutdowns, & EPC Project Construction.

I have contributed immensely to Won Karnataka State Safety Awards in Oil Industry Category on 4th March 2023 for Zero Accidents and 100% safe operations in IndianOil Skytanking India Pvt. Ltd. which is having strength of 629 employees and 200 refueling vehicles doing 1200 aircraft refueling operations per day in India. Qualified as a train the trainer for Defensive Driving from National Safety Council, India and conducted massive defensive driving training for 100 % employees in my current organisation in defensive driving in 2023. My idea of having a strong focus on HSSE Leading Indicators through massive employee engagement exercises is appreciated and rewarded. My article “Safe Practices during Plant Shutdown" is included in National Safety Council Diary 2023 which is the only article available on this subject in Asia Pacific Region and it is very well received by Industry professionals. I have mentored directly 5 members of my HSSE team members and various others in my team, developing them on a day to day basis to become better professionals. I have been awarded CertIOSH on 22nd November 2023 by IOSH, UK which is largest chartered body of Safety Professionals and currently pursuing my continuous professional development for chartered status CMIOSH.

Implementation of Artificial Intelligence Based Safety System in our complete fleet of refuelling vehicles at all major airports for real time assistance to team members driving the refuelling vehicles and further enhance our safety levels. Prepared and circulated HSSE Construction Manual, participated in HAZOP study for IOSL Noida, Noida International Airport Project. This project is under execution and we have already surpassed 4 Million Safe Man Hours in the project. Conducted more than 10 safety seminars in India. Taken 23 trainings for my team members to enhance awareness levels of employees at all levels. Complete digitalisation of all HSSE documentation. Use of Bar Codes and google forms for rapid reportings and feedback forms. Coordination for ISO 45001:2018 certification for IOSL. We are proud to be the first aviation fuelling company to have the certification in India. Strong implementation of HSSE Policy throughout the locations and HSSE corporate governance through structured centralised decision making process, periodic reviews of all locations, and feedback systems in place. Immense involvement of employees at all levels through regular HSSE engagement exercises, monthly safety committee meetings, HSSE MIS reviews. Formation of Apex Safety Committee to investigate and review site investigation reports for detailed corrective action recommendations and implementation to prevent further actions. Our HSSE Index keeps on increasing month over month and it is in generative stage. We do safety by choice.

My influencing ability had helped me to connect better with my team members and they have really support me in strong implementation of HSSE across the locations. I keep innovating on best safety practices and methods for safe operations. It also helped me to connect with other professionals from safety and industry for knowledge exchange during various safety seminars, trainings, and over professional platforms like LinkedIn. This helps to keep updated with latest technologies being developed globally. Some of them are adopted by us now. Few are in the pipeline.

When I joined the organisation, I felt there is a strong need to have better focus on HSSE Leading Indicators and hence I planned around 6 HSSE campaigns which helped me to connect with team and engage them in HSSE activities and enhance their knowledge and awareness of various aspects. For the same, I conduct multiple training and awareness sessions by me as well as my HSSE team. We focussed on good quality and sustainable safety systems for long term benefits of the organisation. That really helped a lot and I can assure that current awareness levels is double than earlier and it keeps on increasing every day. We ask external stakeholders and visitors too to visit us and give their feedback on our safety practices and systems and we implement all the good observations shared. This also helped in remarkable development of the facilities. We keep doing health check ups for employees on a periodic basis. We had created lot of recreational activities for employees - like participation in sports, yoga, various HSSE campaigns where they meet, learn and take benefits. This year we did a special campaign to increase the knowledge awareness of our contractual workers, their welfare and we are proud to say that are equally valued in our organisation and they have been trained in various aspects like fire fighting and safety reportings. Our workers also won Best Worker Awards in Male & Female category.

In my opinion, A safety influencer shall: Be authentic. Be transparent. Be supportive. Keep upgrading knowledge of self and team. Always embrace change and new technologies. He should be full of ideas and energy. Must enjoy working with team and always enjoy what he is doing, otherwise it is not worth. I have been living these values since beginning. I follow a PDCA ( Plan - Do - Check - Act ) in all my activities. This helps me to keep closing the gaps. The most significant on ground work is the implementation of artificial intelligence based safety system for my entire fleet of refuelling vehicles at major airports which also helped us in getting recognition from airports and airlines for safety excellence. We conducted the Quantitative Risk Assessment of our facility and implemented all recommendations. We conducted Fire and Rescue Mock drills - Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 this year involving the district administration and all stakeholders. We won Wings India 2024 award, Bangalore Regional Safety Awards, Delhi Airport Safety Excellence Awards, British Airways Safety Excellence Awards, Karnataka State Safety Awards, and BIAL Gold Awards. These all awards are testimony of hard work done by me and my team members. This had helped me to bring safety to the next level. I have been sharing my knowledge with my team, my safety fraternity, and LinkedIn community by writing articles on important subjects of interest.
