About Nguyen Trung Hau

I am Nguyen Trung Hau from Vietnam, 45 year old. I have 23 years experience on HSE field consist of construction work including Oil & Gas field, factory and highrise building, and managing HSE on factory/plant. I had 5 years work for factory as a HSE Manager (ford vehicle assembly company and Heineken and Tiger beer company) and 14 years as HSE Manager for construction, Shimizu Corporation Company 9 years and Masterise Homes until now for nearly 5 years. I would like to be nominated as Outstanding safety practitioner award 2024.

List the Safety and Health achievements/contributions you have achieved in 2023.

I have achieved 10 million safe-working hours at 2 per 3 projects that I have managed in 2023. The last project we have achieved no accident with 3 days lost, this is a special project with 6 basements (-22.4m depth) located at the old quarter of Ha Noi city so very danger during construction working.

Outline the Workplace Safety and Health initiatives that have been implemented by you in your workplace in 2023.

We set up HSE management system by MasteriseHomes so top management from client, consultant, and contractor are involved for supporting and monitoring HSE performance. Each project we have a HSE plan for implementation consisting of HSE target and objective, HSE rules and policy, HSE training, HSE site patrol, meeting by HSE committee (including project manager/construction manager), conduct risk assessment for all works, provide PPE, apply permit to work system, focus on danger equipment (tower crane/cranes/lifter/elevator/scaffolding/gang form/gondola) and high risk works (scaffolding/formwork/confined space/hot work/lifting/electric safety/falling protection works), provide good utilities/facilities for workers, encourage HSE award programme, and force HSE penalty scheme.
Few safety initiatives we have done similarly are:
  • The number 1 is install horizontal rebars for every two levels/floors of elevator pit inside of building during formwork.
  • The number 2 is the use of line led for temporary lighting/illumination.

Describe and support in detail on how your influencing capability has assisted in the successful implementation of these initiatives.

I follow the HSE plan and monitor them, I always support the HSE site team proactively. Every week, I do site patrol with our HSE site team and meeting to resolve any HSE issues. I don't compromise with safety matter and I try to balance safety with construction progress. Sometimes if safety issues escalates, my boss or top management supports me and fixes them.
Turnback to two safety initiatives above. The No. 1 idea, I am aware that is very helpful and support to prevent falling from high and falling object. The No. 2 idea is prevent electric shock and saving cost, so I (the HSE Manager by client) discussed with Project Manager of contractor and consultant about aspects of benefits and cost saving. Contractor Project Manager had agreed to apply them for 02 buildings per 06 buildings then lastly, they have applied for all the buildings.

Describe and provide support on how your initiative impacted the Safety and Health management and performance of your workplace/community/industry that was above and beyond.

As said above,
No. 1 idea - Install horizontal rebar of elevator pit can provide a temporary working platform for worker removing formwork, doing chipping work, and finishing work. They can save cost instead of using scaffolding for this work and enhancing productivity of work. For safety aspect they are very helpful for the prevention of falling objects and falling from high places during construction work. We also use wooden plank to cover on these rebars or use metal mesh so in the worse case of any worker breaking into from the cover of the elevator door, the risk is reduced significantly.
No. 2 idea - Use the led line for temporary lighting to prevent electric shock because the led line has only 9 voltage instead of the normal lighting at 220 voltage, and it is cost saving too. This kind of led line is very easy for installing (you can hang it at any location by a 1mm wire that is very common on the site), very low impact to construction work, reducing cost for repairing defect work, and improving productivity of work and schedule. They are very useful during finishing work because at this stage, we have to complete the wall and ceiling so installing normal lighting is impossible. Therefore, workers put lighting on the floor or improper ways, causing tripping, lack of lighting, damaging lighting bulb/tube/cords, and then potential electric incident/accident.

In your opinion, what are the attributes of a safety influencer? Do share with us on how you have demonstrated these attributes in your daily work that will earn you the recognition of a WSHAsia Safety Influencer Award Winner in your workplace/community/industry.

My opinion about safety influencer is very fair at work and do not put your personal idea or personal benefit or only your team's profit on the work, think about the team/project/company success, comprehensive on other team's target and overall project objectives, and not only seeing my own HSE scope. Take responsibility for my decision, careful with my decision whether that has a bad or good effect to the employees or environment.
I am passion on HSE work, keep learning and learning day by day at workplace from workers, anyone, or anything that is helpful.
I always make a good example to others such as strictly following the HSE rule and policy, not closing my eyes on any unsafe action/condition, and encouraging for good safety learning or safe actions/conditions.
Training and sharing my HSE knowledge and experiences to colleagues and subordinates or any needs.
The boss and company's top management support is very important as well, my boss understands me well and is always besides me when I needed.
