About Chatchai Kitcharoenpaisarn
Chatchai serves as the Chief Representative Officer (Thailand) for REMBE Asia Pacific Pte Ltd in the Asia Pacific Region. With 9 years of experience in Dust Explosion Safety, I specialise in Fire & Explosion Prevention and Protection across diverse industries. I have been instrumental in raising awareness of Dust Explosion safety in Asia Pacific and Thailand, where previously there was limited concern on this issue.
My academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), where I graduated with 2nd honours.
List the Safety and Health achievements/contributions you have achieved in 2023.
I've successfully gained recognition in the safety department of Thailand after dedicating several years to supporting knowledge within the Engineering and Safety departments. I received an invitation to conduct General Dust Explosion training from The Engineering Institute of Thailand Under His Majesty the King's Patronage (EIT). This organization contributes significantly to the development of knowledge for all Thai engineers. Another notable achievement is being acknowledged by the Risk Assessment Team from insurance communities in Thailand as a third opinion regarding incident investigations when Dust Explosion incidents occur.
Furthermore, I provide training for all Risk Engineering teams in Thailand and the Asia Pacific region to enhance their understanding of Dust Explosion prevention and protection. During one instance, a customer reached out to express their gratitude for recommending them to invest in a safety system after discussing the project for over three years. The installed Explosion protection system activated during an incident, saving all employees in the affected area. This accomplishment fills me with pride as it highlights how my work can directly contribute to saving lives, which holds significant meaning to me.
Outline the Workplace Safety and Health initiatives that have been implemented by you in your workplace in 2023.
I've successfully installed and provided training on Explosion prevention and protection systems in various sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, mining, power, automotive, and plastics industries with multinational companies in 2023. However, my most significant achievement lies in local companies beginning to invest in these systems after I raised awareness and their management started to prioritize Dust Explosion safety.
In the Asia Pacific region, most countries lack regulations for handling combustible dust. Despite the absence of external pressure, these local companies have recognized the risks and are eager to enhance prevention and protection measures against Dust Explosions. Presently, I am part of the Thai Safety department working on drafting guidelines for managing dust explosions or combustible dust, which will eventually evolve into regulations in the near future. While developing regulations for Thailand poses challenges, issuing guidelines will provide essential guidance to all factories in the country. This initiative holds promise for significantly reducing the loss of life in the future, as the consequences of Dust Explosions are severe, despite their low probability of occurrence.
Describe and support in detail on how your influencing capability has assisted in the successful implementation of these initiatives.
Raising awareness about safety presents significant challenges, but I've approached it with empathy, considering how I would perceive the information if I were in their position. This mindset has guided me in tailoring seminars and approaches to effectively communicate the importance of safety. I've customised courses to suit various segments: Operators/Engineers, enabling those on-site to grasp the risks involved and take every precaution to ensure a safe working environment, allowing everyone to return home to their families safely. For Project Engineers, Process Designers, and Plant Owners, I emphasize the importance of understanding Explosion Prevention and Protection during the design phase, even within limited budgets. I provide guidance on optimizing their budget while adhering to international standards, ensuring a reasonable investment for safety. In every situation, I strive to empathize and put myself in others' shoes to facilitate better understanding and implementation of safety measures.
Describe and provide support on how your initiative impacted the Safety and Health management and performance of your workplace/community/industry that was above and beyond.
The recording of Dust Explosion incidents is now becoming more prevalent on the internet. I am honoured to have been able to save the lives of some employees from such incidents through my training courses and recommendations. There have been several cases on which I have worked, of which I am particularly proud, and I have been acknowledged by the Insurance Industry and Engineering consultants in Asia, especially in Thailand. I have actively promoted knowledge sharing, offering free services to companies, government organisations, and safety bodies, including free site surveys and reports to kick-start safety improvements. After years of hard work, I have succeeded in raising safety awareness in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Thailand. Dust Explosion is now a topic regularly addressed by the Safety Department of Thailand. It has reached a point where I am contributing to the development of Thailand's safety standards regarding dust explosions. This goes beyond my initial expectations of simply wanting to enhance safety in Asia. After several years, I find myself involved in shaping new standards for the country.
In your opinion, what are the attributes of a safety influencer? Do share with us on how you have demonstrated these attributes in your daily work that will earn you the recognition of a WSHAsia Safety Influencer Award Winner in your workplace/community/industry.
In my view, a Safety influencer is someone who aims to enhance people's safety in every aspect of their daily lives. My focus lies particularly on Dust Explosion Safety, a topic many perceive as distant from their concerns. However, I believe it holds significant importance. Frankly, safety isn't a top priority in Asia. Many overlook it because they don't see immediate financial returns. Yet, they forget the fundamental reason for their work: their families. If they can't return to their loved ones due to an accident, all their efforts seem futile. I illuminate the overlooked risks, which I believe will become significant concerns for every Asian country one day. My nine years of dedication to this cause have proven worthwhile. At its core, safety is about protecting lives. I'd like to share a quote from my company, one that resonates with me daily: "Safety is for Life."
