In 2023, one of my most phenomenal achievements was receiving a Platinum Award from the World Invention Intellectual Property Association (WIIPA) for my contribution to creating the "K3i.verse," a virtual reality-based learning technology designed to recognize hazards in the container loading and unloading environment. This prestigious accolade was presented in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Additionally, I was honoured with a Gold Award from SmartiLAB in the Republic of Morocco, and a Special Award from the Academy of Princess Chulabhorn SHS in Thailand, for my innovation "HORshe" (House of Risk for Safety, Health, etc.). Further recognition came in the form of a Special Award from the Korea University Invention Association in South Korea, and the Highly Innovative Unique Foundation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for the "Bandar Safety" innovation.
Throughout 2023, I successfully secured 15 acknowledgments of copyrights from the Indonesian Ministry of Law for various research outputs in the occupational safety and health (OSH) field. Moreover, I delivered approximately five webinars or public lectures, attracting around 2000 participants from diverse backgrounds including practitioners, bureaucrats, academics, and students. Notably, several of my scientific works were published and indexed by Scopus during the year, comprising two articles in international journals and three articles in conference proceedings. Furthermore, in 2023, I authored a reference book entitled "Human Factors in Safety Systems."
Outline the Workplace Safety and Health initiatives that have been implemented by you in your workplace in 2023.
At the national level, the OSH initiative I carried out was to lead a team of cross-sector experts consisting of bureaucrats, practitioners, representatives of professional associations, and academics to develop standards and regulations that were enforced in Indonesia. At the Ministry of Manpower, I led various discussions and technical work on regulation writing to develop Indonesian national competency standards for human factors and ergonomics issues. This standard becomes material for assessing the safety practitioners’s competency. At the Ministry of Education, I led a team to develop an OSH management system to be implemented in all universities in Indonesia.
The team I led contributed to delivering hazard identification training at the state-owned company, namely Pelindo TPK. We have provided the training at port locations in three cities, namely Surabaya, Bitung, and Ambon. Training has been provided using conventional methods and virtual-reality technology we created especially for Pelindo.
I have also initiated an open campaign about the urgency of implementing OSH at a Surabaya Car Free Day event. Thousands of Surabaya residents who are active on Car Free Day were our target audience. I also took the initiative to develop a new study program at my campus, namely safety engineering processes.
Describe and support in detail on how your influencing capability has assisted in the successful implementation of these initiatives.
Developing regulations in a ministerial environment with many experts is not easy, especially as the team members have different backgrounds. My strength in influencing and managing cross-expert teams lies in my ability to describe complex ideas into simple mind maps that are easy for all parties to understand. My track record of teaching and research on campus and experience with industrial partners and within professional safety organizations are positive things that support my efforts in coordinating and influencing all existing stakeholders. Another ability I have is lobbying and uniting various interested parties to realize a common vision. During training activities at Pelindo TPK, I succeeded in convincing the funding agency to win a research grant so that we could create Virtual-reality technology and provide hazard identification training. Organising an open OSH campaign on Car Free Day is a new format that I came up with. The ability to look for new ideas is my weapon in influencing other people. All of these mentioned abilities also support me in developing the process safety engineering study programme at my campus. Together with colleagues from other departments, I succeeded in getting approval to establish a process safety engineering study programme.
Describe and provide support on how your initiative impacted the Safety and Health management and performance of your workplace/community/industry that was above and beyond.
Our efforts to develop Indonesian national competency standards for human factors and ergonomics have received broad support from practitioners. This standard is needed to improve safety culture. The OSH management system for higher education also received good appreciation from various stakeholders during the final discussion of the regulation.
The development of virtual-reality technology for hazard identification and training provided in three cities succeeded in increasing the safety awareness of Pelindo TPK employees. Based on statistical testing, it was found that there was an increase in safety awareness among Pelindo TPK employees after receiving hazard identification training using the Virtual-reality technology that we created. Positive testimonials were given by employees and Pelindo TPK leaders who took part in the training. This success was the key point in obtaining a Platinum Award from WIIPA in international innovation competitions. Event documentation available in the links:
The open campaign about OSH implementation at the Car Free Day event received a lot of appreciation from the people of the city of Surabaya. In your opinion, what are the attributes of a safety influencer? Do share with us on how you have demonstrated these attributes in your daily work that will earn you the recognition of a WSHAsia Safety Influencer Award Winner in your workplace/community/industry.
Some attributes of safety influencers are consistency and continuity, originality of work/ideas, as well as network and professionalism. Being an OSH influencer and researcher on campus, I must embody consistency in developing new initiatives around OSH for the betterment of humankind. Continuity is paramount for sustainability in the future. For me, receiving an award is not the ultimate goal. Instead, I harbour a vision to perpetually advocate for a safety culture across various industrial sectors and in human life, irrespective of accolades.
The ideal Safety Influencer prioritises the originality of work/ideas. This originality necessitates a foundation of critical thinking regarding prevailing safety conditions. I devised a risk assessment model called HORShe (House of Risk for Safety, Health, etc.) and Safety Model Canvas based on critical analysis of the deficiencies in existing methods. To uphold continuity and originality, this year I am engrossed in writing a new reference book, crafting journal manuscripts, and conducting experiments.
Network attributes prove invaluable in expediting OSH campaigns, while professionalism underscores the influencer's apt competence. I am committed to enhancing my network and competencies to better serve society.
