First-of-its-kind state of workplace safety report by Blackline Safety reveals disconnect between protocol and practice, highlighting the need for an integrated approach to protect workers

Calgary, Alberta, March 24, 2026 – With lost-time workplace incidents remaining high worldwide—to the tune of hundreds of millions of work-related injuries and illnesses occurring annually—95% of safety leaders plan to maintain or increase their budgets over the next two years.

That’s the finding of a recent study commissioned by leading connected safety technology provider Blackline Safety—and conducted by independent research firm NewtonX—which surveyed 200 senior safety and operations professionals globally at companies with at least 500 employees about current industry practices and future outlooks.

The results are compiled in a first-of-its-kind Keeping People Safe: Global Data on the State of Workplace Safety report, which is accessible free of charge.

According to the survey, 97% of safety leaders believe workplace safety is fundamental to reliable productivity. Still, despite heavily investing in health and safety and understanding the tie to business health, 64% of those queried see a gap between safety protocol and real-world behaviour.

“It’s clear from the survey that a majority of experts support a change in safety culture across industries”, said Christine Gillies, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Blackline Safety.

“As a result, we’ll see safety increasingly becoming a holistic, enterprise-wide operating system instead of a compliance function, and companies that treat it this way will close the protocol-behaviour gap, creating safer and more productive workplaces”

She cited feedback from those surveyed that points to potential reasons for this gap, including disconnections between people, process, and technology, a lack of understanding of a worksite’s day-to-day realities by protocol-creators, and additional processes being created that fail to address root causes of safety issues.

“Three pillars make up a strong safety culture—training and communication, tools and technology, and data and reporting”, Gillies said.

“Most organisations have all three, yet few have them working together, which means gaps persist even when investment increases”

Other report highlights include:

Safety leaders’ top five budget priorities are worker training (46%), workforce engagement (41%), improvements of infrastructure to reduce risk (34%), new technology (30%), and internal advocacy to promote value of safety (29%).

Nearly one third of respondents see better training as a path to greater worker trust—not more training, but training that’s relevant, continuous, two-way, and builds on a culture of safety, rather than being top-down.

When it comes to setting safety targets, 76% of safety leaders say zero incident goals persist but are unrealistic.

Organisations are investing in a multitude of safety tools and devices to meet safety, compliance, and productivity needs—including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), walkie-talkies/radios, and advanced technologies—yet leaders said only 36% of workers have a great deal of trust in their companies’ tools and procedures, while 92% have some level of trust.

65% of leaders expect AI risk prediction tools to become increasingly key. In particular, they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in AI tools when it comes to safety data analytics and reporting (84%), training and simulation (83%), and predictive risk analytics (79%).

While most respondents (73%) indicate they review incident reports and near-miss records, only a third (33.5%) spend time on predictive analytics to forecast risk, which has the potential to stop or reduce similar incidents from happening in the future.

Fulton County, Illinois, 25 March 2026 – EDP, through EDP Renewables North America LLC (EDPR NA), today celebrated the completion of Pleasantville Solar, a 150-megawatt (MW) clean energy project in Fulton County, Illinois. The project will generate enough electricity to meet the equivalent annual demand of more than 39,500 homes and businesses while enhancing grid reliability, supporting Illinois’ energy independence, and driving sustained regional economic growth.

“Amid skyrocketing power demand in Illinois, Pleasantville Solar is fueling the Prairie State’s
economy and communities with reliable, homegrown energy,”

said Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America.

“Projects like Pleasantville Solar ensure that local families and businesses reap the benefits of long-term revenue, job creation, and resilient energy infrastructure—all while supporting statewide economic development goals and rising power needs. As one of Illinois’ leading clean energy operators, we are proud to deliver projects that create lasting value for our communities and customers.”

The full output of the 150 MW of solar energy is contracted through a long-term power purchase agreement with Microsoft.
EDPR NA has reinforced its commitment to community partnership with more than $45,000 in donations to local entities and organizations, including the VIT Community Unit School District #2, The Village of Ipava, the Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development, the Fulton County Fair, and the Ipava Camp Ellis Days Festival.

EDPR NA is a longstanding and reliable clean energy provider in Illinois, with 1.6 GW of gross operating capacity that generates enough electricity each year to power more than 548,000 homes. Through landmark projects such as Harvest Ridge Wind, Bright Stalk Wind, Rail Splitter Wind, Top Crop Wind I & II, Twin Groves Wind I & II, Hickory Solar, and Wolf Run Solar, EDPR NA has delivered $1.3 billion in total economic impact statewide—including $1.1 billion invested in-state, $116.4 million in payments to participating landowners to diversify property revenue and provide a steady source of income, and $111.3 million contributed to local governments. EDPR NA’s energy infrastructure portfolio also bolsters Illinois’ workforce, supporting 79 permanent jobs and 880 construction jobs, all while strengthening energy security and maintaining land-compatible uses for local communities.

EDPR NA maintains seven operations and maintenance (O&M) facilities in Illinois to support the dependable operation of its clean energy assets. In August 2023, EDPR NA opened its Technician Training Facility in Bloomington; the facility trains an average of 100 solar and wind technicians annually who are dispatched across EDPR NA’s operational assets spanning Illinois and the United States.

Calgary, Canada, February 20, 2026 – With millions gathering in Northern Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics, local emergency response officials have been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure everything runs safely and smoothly.

To ensure maximum security, especially as the closing ceremonies get underway, the Belluno Provincial Fire Brigade has equipped a team of specialists with leading technology from Canadian company and global connected safety leader Blackline Safety.

The team is focused on nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological risks, and are specially trained to provide immediate response and rescue in emergency situations where such threats are identified or likely.

They have chosen Blackline Safety’s advanced connected gas and radiation detection systems to use for pre-event venue sweeps and live event monitoring to safeguard athletes, spectators and staff from invisible threats such as toxic gases and radioactive agents.

Specifically, they are using 40 Blackline Safety G7c wearable gas detection devices that monitor a range of toxic gases and VOCs, as well as six EXO 8 area monitors, half with added Gamma radiation detection. This is the most advanced connected safety technology currently available.

The Belluno Provincial Fire Brigade is part of the larger Fire Department of Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige, a division of the National Fire, Public Rescue and Civil Defence Corps of Italy (Dipartimento dei Vigili del Fuoco, del Soccorso Pubblico e della Difesa Civile).

The team is tasked with checking Olympics sports venue safety across the Milan-Cortina region before the public is allowed entry. They use the Blackline devices to check for contaminants before doors open, defining clear boundaries around areas that could potentially be affected by deadly gases or radioactive agents.

The G7c personal gas detectors are also worn by Brigade crew members inside venues during events, and outside in the streets and Olympic village to ensure fast response in case of any threat.

Blackline Safety worked with Italy-based channel partner SWS (Safety Work Services) to provide the equipment to the Fire Brigade.

About Blackline Safety:
Blackline Safety is a technology leader driving innovation in the industrial workforce through IoT (Internet of Things).
(Launched in the October 2025 Edition of the WSHAsia e-Magazine)

Singapore, October 2025 – World of Safety & Health Asia (WSHAsia) has officially introduced its Support the Mission initiative, a community-driven effort designed to ensure that safety knowledge remains freely accessible to every Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) professional across the Asia Pacific region. The initiative was first unveiled in the October 2025 issue of the WSHAsia e-Magazine and is now being highlighted across WSHAsia’s digital platforms.

For years, WSHAsia has been guided by a simple but powerful belief:

“You can’t prevent what you don’t know”

From the beginning, the WSHAsia e-Magazine has been offered at no cost, providing open access to safety insights, industry trends, expert contributions, and real-world stories that help organisations strengthen their workplace safety culture.

Born From the Community’s Voice

The Support the Mission initiative began after receiving numerous messages from readers who shared how the free publication improved their safety practices, enhanced team training, or helped spark new ideas within their organisations.

Many expressed a desire to support WSHAsia’s mission out of appreciation for the positive impact that accessible OSH knowledge has brought to their work.

Rather than creating a paywall or subscription model, WSHAsia chose a different path, an open invitation for the community to stand behind the mission of keeping safety knowledge free, inclusive, and available to all.

Strengthening a Shared Purpose

Support the Mission is not about funding a magazine, it is about sustaining a movement.
Each expression of support helps WSHAsia:

Expand the reach of the e-Magazine across Asia Pacific

Continue delivering credible, practical, and life-saving OSH content every two months

Maintain open access for all readers, regardless of budget or geography

“OSH knowledge should never be restricted. Every safety professional, from large corporations to frontline workers, deserves access to insights that can help save lives. This initiative is about keeping that door open.”

Raymond Wat, Founder of WSHAsia

Celebrating the Community Behind the Mission

To recognise those who stand behind the cause, all supporters will be acknowledged in upcoming issues. This acknowledgement symbolises the shared commitment of the OSH community, professionals united by a belief that safety knowledge must remain open, accessible, and empowering for all.

A Continuing Call to Purpose

Ultimately, the mission is simple:

To save lives through knowledge.
And to ensure that knowledge flows freely without barriers, limits, or cost.

Support the Mission today: https://wshasia.com/support-the-mission-keep-safety-knowledge-accessible/

Connected safety technology leader boosts investment in product testing, reliability for global market

Calgary, Canada,August 13, 2025 – Blackline Safety Corp. (TSX: BLN), a global leader in connected safety technology, has announced a major expansion of its quality assurance (QA) program. As part of the expansion, the company has increased its QA team, upgraded its inspection equipment, and boosted in-lab testing of its entire product line.

Headquartered in Canada with offices in the UK, France, U.S., and UAE, Blackline manufactures an award-winning line of connected safety wearables and area gas monitors, currently used by more than 2,200 organizations and protecting over 165,000 workers worldwide. Providing live monitoring, automatic incident alerts, and location-based insights, the technology helps teams respond faster, prevent incidents, and make informed decisions through real-time safety data.

“When most people think of safety technology, they think about the moment it matters – a gas leak detected, an SOS alert triggered, or a worker protected – but our team is focused on everything that leads up to that moment because protection starts on the bench, in the lab, and on the line,” said Blair Svoboda, Director, Quality Assurance at Blackline Safety.

The expansion of Blackline’s QA program – which is conducted entirely in-house at the company’s manufacturing facility – builds on its historical investment of CDN $2 million in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and advanced inspection tools to provide greater oversight and control throughout the entire production process. Automated state-of-the-art equipment tests product reliability (dock insertions, button presses, etc.) and ensures the devices are able to withstand water immersion, extreme temperatures, and dust penetration, which could potentially damage internal components.

“All of our quality assurance testing is done in true-to-life simulated environments just steps from the manufacturing floor to enable us to react in real time as needed – a process that just can’t be achieved when manufacturing is done elsewhere,” Svoboda said. He explained that Blackline’s global team of 35 quality assurance specialists – which has grown by more than 250% – runs a 68-point quality test on every single safety device before it ships, from testing radios, sensors and alarms, to conducting connectivity checks across cellular and satellite networks.

“Every test and check in our QA process comes down to one simple question: will this device keep someone safe when it counts?” Svoboda emphasized. “At Blackline, quality assurance isn’t about ticking boxes – it’s about protecting professionals like the lone worker in a remote oilfield, the firefighter charging into danger, or the technician maintaining a power grid in a storm.”
