First-of-its-kind state of workplace safety report by Blackline Safety reveals disconnect between protocol and practice, highlighting the need for an integrated approach to protect workers

Calgary, Alberta, March 24, 2026 – With lost-time workplace incidents remaining high worldwide—to the tune of hundreds of millions of work-related injuries and illnesses occurring annually—95% of safety leaders plan to maintain or increase their budgets over the next two years.

That’s the finding of a recent study commissioned by leading connected safety technology provider Blackline Safety—and conducted by independent research firm NewtonX—which surveyed 200 senior safety and operations professionals globally at companies with at least 500 employees about current industry practices and future outlooks.

The results are compiled in a first-of-its-kind Keeping People Safe: Global Data on the State of Workplace Safety report, which is accessible free of charge.

According to the survey, 97% of safety leaders believe workplace safety is fundamental to reliable productivity. Still, despite heavily investing in health and safety and understanding the tie to business health, 64% of those queried see a gap between safety protocol and real-world behaviour.

“It’s clear from the survey that a majority of experts support a change in safety culture across industries”, said Christine Gillies, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Blackline Safety.

“As a result, we’ll see safety increasingly becoming a holistic, enterprise-wide operating system instead of a compliance function, and companies that treat it this way will close the protocol-behaviour gap, creating safer and more productive workplaces”

She cited feedback from those surveyed that points to potential reasons for this gap, including disconnections between people, process, and technology, a lack of understanding of a worksite’s day-to-day realities by protocol-creators, and additional processes being created that fail to address root causes of safety issues.

“Three pillars make up a strong safety culture—training and communication, tools and technology, and data and reporting”, Gillies said.

“Most organisations have all three, yet few have them working together, which means gaps persist even when investment increases”

Other report highlights include:

Safety leaders’ top five budget priorities are worker training (46%), workforce engagement (41%), improvements of infrastructure to reduce risk (34%), new technology (30%), and internal advocacy to promote value of safety (29%).

Nearly one third of respondents see better training as a path to greater worker trust—not more training, but training that’s relevant, continuous, two-way, and builds on a culture of safety, rather than being top-down.

When it comes to setting safety targets, 76% of safety leaders say zero incident goals persist but are unrealistic.

Organisations are investing in a multitude of safety tools and devices to meet safety, compliance, and productivity needs—including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), walkie-talkies/radios, and advanced technologies—yet leaders said only 36% of workers have a great deal of trust in their companies’ tools and procedures, while 92% have some level of trust.

65% of leaders expect AI risk prediction tools to become increasingly key. In particular, they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in AI tools when it comes to safety data analytics and reporting (84%), training and simulation (83%), and predictive risk analytics (79%).

While most respondents (73%) indicate they review incident reports and near-miss records, only a third (33.5%) spend time on predictive analytics to forecast risk, which has the potential to stop or reduce similar incidents from happening in the future.

Calgary, Canada, February 20, 2026 – With millions gathering in Northern Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics, local emergency response officials have been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure everything runs safely and smoothly.

To ensure maximum security, especially as the closing ceremonies get underway, the Belluno Provincial Fire Brigade has equipped a team of specialists with leading technology from Canadian company and global connected safety leader Blackline Safety.

The team is focused on nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological risks, and are specially trained to provide immediate response and rescue in emergency situations where such threats are identified or likely.

They have chosen Blackline Safety’s advanced connected gas and radiation detection systems to use for pre-event venue sweeps and live event monitoring to safeguard athletes, spectators and staff from invisible threats such as toxic gases and radioactive agents.

Specifically, they are using 40 Blackline Safety G7c wearable gas detection devices that monitor a range of toxic gases and VOCs, as well as six EXO 8 area monitors, half with added Gamma radiation detection. This is the most advanced connected safety technology currently available.

“The Olympic Games represent one of the most complex public safety environments in the world, making pre-event sweeps and active monitoring critical”

says Cody Slater, THE CEO and Chair of Blackline Safety.

“Blackline Safety’s real-time connected technology is recognised worldwide for its ability to enhance personnel and public safety and save lives”

The Belluno Provincial Fire Brigade is part of the larger Fire Department of Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige, a division of the National Fire, Public Rescue and Civil Defence Corps of Italy (Dipartimento dei Vigili del Fuoco, del Soccorso Pubblico e della Difesa Civile).

The team is tasked with checking Olympics sports venue safety across the Milan-Cortina region before the public is allowed entry. They use the Blackline devices to check for contaminants before doors open, defining clear boundaries around areas that could potentially be affected by deadly gases or radioactive agents.

The G7c personal gas detectors are also worn by Brigade crew members inside venues during events, and outside in the streets and Olympic village to ensure fast response in case of any threat.

Blackline Safety worked with Italy-based channel partner SWS (Safety Work Services) to provide the equipment to the Fire Brigade.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
26 January 2026

SINGAPORE – The WSHAsia Award 2026 is returning for its seventh year with a landmark evolution. After six successful years as a purely digital event, WSHAsia is proud to announce that, for the first time ever, the winners will be awarded at a live, in-person ceremony.

This move to a physical stage reflects WSHAsia’s commitment to fostering deeper industry connections while maintaining its dedication to environmental responsibility.

This year’s format introduces a two-stage celebration:

Shortlisted Announcement Livestream: Maintaining our digital tradition, we will hold a global livestream to officially announce the shortlisted finalists.

Gala Dinner Presentation Ceremony: All winners will be revealed and celebrated in person.

On top of that, WSHAsia is also excited to present a new category open for entries starting this year, the Visionary Leader Award.

This category aims to recognise Business Owners, CEOs, Managing Directors, and C-suite Executives across the Asia Pacific region who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in championing workplace safety and health. This category will honour three recipients, comprising two Visionary Leaders and one Visionary Leader of the Year.

Company to showcase new Fire-Hazmat innovations at FDIC 2025, Indianapolis, as first EXO 8 Gamma area monitors ship to customers across North America this month.

Calgary, Canada, April 1, 2025 –– As worker injuries and public safety risks continue to rise, global safety technology leader Blackline Safety Corp. (TSX: BLN) has announced record growth in the number of fire hazmat customers using its connected personal and area monitors.

Worldwide, the number of Blackline fire-hazmat customers grew 175% in the last year, from 127 to 350, with thousands of users across North America, Europe, Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. Fire-hazmat teams take on some of the highest risks of any worker, with a fatal injury rate three times higher than that of the average worker. The adoption of Blackline’s cloud-connected products adds another layer of safety not previously available to protect them in their jobs every day.

“Blackline’s remote monitoring capabilities allow me to log in any time and see what my guys are dealing with and then to triage what other assets are needed on the scene at any time”, said Travis Rebello, a Firefighter and Hazmat Coordinator for the City of New Bedford, Massachusetts. “I’m a big fan and appreciate Blackline’s excellent customer service”.

“The capability of real-time connected technology is no longer a luxury— it’s essential for enhancing personnel safety and saving lives”, said Doug Mayer, Fire Hazmat Business Development Specialist at Blackline Safety. “From gas leaks and chemical spill incidents of all kinds, and now gamma radiation, we’ve reimagined safety solutions to help responders deploy equipment faster, get more gas exposure information, and share data for real-time visibility”.

First EXO 8 Gamma Monitors Shipping This Month

The company also announced that the first shipments of its innovative EXO 8 Gamma area monitor will begin later this month.

“EXO 8’s gamma detection capability is a game-changer for fire and hazmat teams — not only in emergency response, but also in public event monitoring”, said Mayer.

EXO 8 is the only direct-to-cloud portable area monitor capable of detecting up to eight gases and gamma radiation simultaneously, giving teams early warning of emerging threats and ensuring faster, better-informed responses.
